Orlando House Concert highlights
24/10/08 11:23
First off, I would like to extend my gratitude to
Roxanne and Cindy for coordinating the whole effort
into putting this House Concert together - It was a
perfect evening under the stars. The guest list
included some very old and dear friends, my family,
and some new faces. Everyone seemed to have a good
time and made me feel very honored to perform.
Still working out the glitches of live performances, though. This time it had to do with lighting and my glasses. I wanted to video my performance and since I have had no success in past tapings, mostly with low light situations, I decided to invest in stage lighting. Well, stage lighting is pretty expensive, so I thought I would use a ‘work utility light’ as an alternative. Got ‘em to Lowe’s. 1000 Watts. On a stand. Overkill.
Since the concert started at 7:30pm, the sun had already gone down which made it hard for me to see my songbook - and I didn’t want to wear my glasses out of vanity for the camera. The makeshift ‘spotlight’ was blinding my left eye, but we never could get it set to where it was going to be effective.
I made it through the first 2 songs, then had to pull out READING GLASSES to see my MP3 Player to select the next track - that looked real professional - Performing live on stage, with Ben Franklin style reading glasses hanging off my nose. So, I decided to just change to my Concert glasses (it has some correction in the left eye) But all those glasses seemed to do was make the Halogen Ray o’ Death spotlight reflect even more light into my eyes! I think they were acting like a magnifying glass, that, when held a such an angle, could fry an ant on the sidewalk in 3.5 seconds.
I am not used to wearing glasses while performing, so it seemed each time I moved my guitar out of the way to get to my equipment, the tuning pegs kept catching up on my glasses. It almost slung them across the room once and almost broke my nose another time. But I endured. I ended up not wearing the glasses in the second half of the show because I was mostly singing from background tracks on my MP3 player.
As I began singing “Hello God” he made His presence known - the breeze noticeably picked up a bit and then “clank’ - the lighting slipped down on the lighting stand, thus illuminating my midsection instead of my face.
One day I will have a problem free performance, but what fun would that be?
